“I cannot await starting with my work at the YMCA and with it also start a new chapter in my life.”

Why did you choose to do an International Youth Voluntary Service?

  • I also wanted to try something new and not go to university immediately. I especially like travelling, as well as getting to know new cultures and people.

Why Hong Kong?

  • I have always been interested in China and I have been there already before. I found Hong Kong especially interesting due to its status as a Special Administrative Region. It is also a unique opportunity to get to know such a city that I would otherwise maybe not notice that much.

What needed to be into your suitcase?

  • Drawing equipment (my favourite brushes/pencils)

What do you hope for through this International Youth Voluntary Service in Hong Kong?

  • I hope to become more independent, to build up contacts and friendships, to hopefully travel a bit, and to learn the language.

Was do you want to do after your International Youth Voluntary Service in Hong Kong?

  • Hopefully study architecture in Darmstadt (Hesse, Germany).

“So far, my life is very protected and normal. Therefore, I decided to go abroad for one year; Hong Kong is totally different than what I am used to so far.”

Why did you choose to do an International Youth Voluntary Service?

  • I want to do something social and Christian, give one year to God, and experience something completely different.

Why Hong Kong?

  • Because it is the exact opposite to my village and, further, colourful with lots of green areas and highly developed.

What needed to be into your suitcase?

  • Hopefully everything I needed and cutlery and a lot of sunscreen.

What do you hope for through this International Youth Voluntary Service in Hong Kong?

  • To have a time I can tell many great things about that I experienced; to take a one-year break from the German system, that is, first school, and then work until retiring.

Was do you want to do after your International Youth Voluntary Service in Hong Kong?

  • Probably continue working in the district administration.

“In China, I hope to improve my knowledge of Mandarin and Cantonese and to enlarge my knowledge about the Chinese culture.”

Why did you choose to do an International Youth Voluntary Service?

  • After having finished school, it is time for me to experience life out of a totally different perspective, and to completely focus on one job and duty, before I can make important decisions for my life.

Why Hong Kong?

  • Because I have already spent a school year in Hong Kong, I know that there is a unique mixture of the Chinese culture with influence from Britain and all parts of the world. In order to further satisfy my fascination of the Chinese culture and also to deepen my language knowledge it has pulled me back into this important city for me. Nevertheless,  I am also looking forward to trips into further parts of the Middle Kingdom and hope for some short missions in Guangzhou.

What needed to be into your suitcase?

  • Pictures of my friends and family, Cantonese dictionary

What do you hope for through this International Youth Voluntary Service in Hong Kong?

  • I hope to be able to lead conversations in Cantonese, to experience formative and path breaking encounters, also with God, and to take away as much as possible out of this special culture for my life. I also hope for great trips.

Was do you want to do after your International Youth Voluntary Service in Hong Kong?

  • So far, I do not know precisely what to do after my voluntary service. During the year, I hope to recognise the for my life journey determining interests and skills.
